What is the main goal of the society?
Our main goal is to offer easy access and knowledge to 3D printing technology in order to add value to our student life and the general public.
Who can join the society?
Hud3dPS is open to students from all courses (no prior knowledge is required) and to non-students. Non-students gain a guest status when joining the society.
How can I be an official member of Hud3dPS?
You can officially join by accessing our page in the Students's Union website.
How do I 3D print when joining the society?
What is 3D Printing ?
3D printing is a technology that transforms digital files into physical products. It is often referred as Additive Manufacturing since it operates by slicing the 3D file and produce it in a layer upon layer way, until the product is finished.
While there is different 3D Printing technologies, most of them need 3 main components: a 3D Model file, a slicer software and a 3D printer.
What are the different 3D printing technologies ?
3D Printing is split to many different technologies. The main used ones are the following:
Which Technology is being used by the Society?
The society does currently use FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) technology.
How can I access the other 3D printing technologies?
SLA - Binder Jetting - FDM : University of Huddersfield 3D Printing Facility
What printer does the society have and its specifications?
The society currently have a Zortrax M200, machine specifications can be found here.
The society also recently aquired an Ultimaker 3 Extended, its specifications can be found here.
What are the different materials used on the Zortrax M200 and Ultimaker 3 Extended?
The Zortrax M200 can currently use 6 different materials: Z-ABS, Z-ULTRAT, Z-GLASS, Z-HIPS, Z-PETG, Z-PCABS.
More details on specifications of each material can be found here.
Ultimaker 3 Extended can use the following: Nylon, ABS, CPE Family, PVA, PC, TPU, PP, Breakaway, and any other exotic filament on the market like bronze, wood, and aluminium ones. More details on each material can be found here
What 3D modelling software should I use?
To prepare the 3D model, any software that can export to the common .stl file can be used.
What should I be aware of when desiging for 3D printing?
How can I learn 3D modelling ?
We recommend doing research to find the suitable software for what you want to design and then use Lynda (University students have free access) to lean how to use it.
Can I download ready to print designs from the web ?
It is very important to keep in mind the copyrights related to the downloaded designs.
Can I use the society machine ?
Yes, students that are members get free full training on how to use the machine, get full assistance in their first 3D prints and then gain full access to the machine with constant guidance. Members also get access to the society print management system that makes it easy to follow up on the queue and more.
How much does it cost ?
Student members get yo use the 3D printer free of charge and only need to pay for the consumed Plastic material.
Is there any tutorials on how to use the society machine ?
However the best way is to come see us :D !
